Direct answer
Professional supervision is structured, protected time in which a practitioner reflects on their work with a supervisor. It can support professional judgement, accountability, learning, wellbeing and more considered decision-making.
A supervision session can explore professional decisions, difficult situations, boundaries, ethical questions, workload pressures, relationships, areas of uncertainty and opportunities for development. The emphasis is on reflection and learning rather than simply reporting completed tasks.
Reflection creates space to examine not only what happened, but how professional judgement was formed, what assumptions may have influenced a response and what could be strengthened next time.
Not necessarily. Line management commonly includes operational responsibilities such as performance, workload and organisational priorities. Professional supervision can create a separate reflective space focused more directly on practice, judgement, learning and professional responsibility.
